Letter from the Founder
African Women Health Project International

  • Can you imagine a mother of 10 children never in her life having seen a doctor for pre-natal or post-natal care?
  • A woman in her 40’s not having heard of a PAP smear?
  • A child with a minor cut that turns into serious infection for lack of an antiseptic?

Such situations are common in impoverished areas of West Africa. The African Women’s Health Project International (AWHPI) is making a change in the lives of many of these families by getting needed medical care and medicines to them.  Education, food, clothing, and other humanitarian support also are among the range of services that the foundation provides for the women and children of these countries.

African Women’s Health Project International is a non-profit foundation formed to improve health care needs of women in Africa who will otherwise not have adequate healthcare. While the majority of people who live in poor nations of the world have been preoccupied with the struggle for basic necessities of life (food, water, clothes, and shelter), cancer has silently grown to be an enormous problem, specifically – breast and cervical cancer.

Each year over 500,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 80% of them reside in developing countries. The majority of these women die within a short period of time due to lack of adequate medical care. Most are young married and have children. Thus, in Africa where mothers are relied upon to provide for and raise the children, cancers not only steal their lives, but tragically disrupt the entire family.

The core focus of AWHPI is to reach women with the medical care they so desperately need during their reproductive years and through this effort also address the other basics that affect their quality of life.

AWHPI is in collaboration with other healthcare organizations and donor governments to develop appropriate and effective policies and programs on women's health programs. The Foundation’s work in women’s health is focused on three general issue areas: primary and general medical care for women and children; women health issues such as birth control and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases through effort in health awareness classes and seminars; and providing medical outreach center for women to receive FREE medical care at the clinic or hospital that will be set-up.

"We have known for decades that the best way for...the world to thrive is to ensure that its women have the freedom, power, and knowledge to make decisions affecting their own lives and those of their families and communities."
—UN Secretary General Kofi Annan

Women's health rights are central to social and economic justice and global well being. When the fundamental rights of women are respected and their health and educational needs are addressed, then communities as well as nations are stronger, safer, and more stable.

Network has been pivotal to develop and implement in Nigeria an exceptional national women’s health policy, improving access to contraceptive choices and devising means to reduce maternal deaths in rural and other isolated communities. Based in Little Rock, Arkansas, AWHPI is a non-profit foundation dedicatedly solely to this mission.  We are working to provide access to free medical care for people in impoverished areas of West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Ghana, and spread health education and awareness.  We can do it — with the tremendous surplus of medical supplies generated here in the United States and through your support!

Our long-term goal is to establish a free healthcare facility that will provide relief of human suffering and improve and extend the lives of people in the community. It will create jobs, be a focus of community pride and stimulate economic growth in the community. Our immediate goal is to get needed help to these locations through free quarterly medical clinics and support missions.  Through donations from hospitals, private practitioners, manufacturers, retailers, pharmaceuticals companies, and other sources, it is possible.  To date, we have collected and donated more than 5,000 pounds of supplies.

The supply needs’ list is comprehensive.  At the top are medical equipments, prescription and non-prescription medicines, personal hygiene items, and computer and office supplies and school supplies.  At AWHPI we realized that if we are to make significant changes in the motherland, we need your help. We ask that you assist us in bringing healing to the women and children of Africa.

AWHPI is a Registered and Incorporated public charity foundation in the State of Arkansas under the tax-exempt 501(c)3 status from the IRS. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law, and all donors will receive an acknowledgement letter confirming their gift. We thank you for your Compassion, and request your Help, Assistance, and Prayers. By Supporting AWHPI you are Saving Lives! Please consider all the voices that will never be heard!  May God Bless you.

P.S. By embracing the women of these nations, we are saving lives and touching the lives of entire families.  I do hope that you will choose to join.
